Recap Jan 2019: WIP into Shape

Event recap

by Jennifer Carole Lewis

We started the year getting WIPped into shape.

Eve Langlais explained the many different online services and programs available for independent publishing today, such as Vellum, Draft 2 Digital, Findaway and Ingram.

We didn’t get many takers on the first page critique with Jenn Burke, but if you’re interested, ORWA has an active critique circle and is happy to set authors up together.

Jennifer Carole Lewis went over the ways to fine tune your pitch when presenting to agents and editors.  She explained that knowing a one or two line pitch is critical, no matter what your publishing path, because the pitch is what draws in a reader, regardless of whether or not an author is hoping for a sale or a contract.

And Christine Enta worked hard at the brainstorming table.  Good brainstorming is like good improv, the key is to choose a starting point and then explore all the “and thens” until the pieces start falling into place.  Sometimes the act of saying the issue aloud or writing it down can be enough to shake loose a stuck mind.

Workshops like these remind us of why joining an organization like ORWA make the difference, whether an author is established or just beginning.  Writers understand other writers and hanging out with a bunch of people who get what we want to do is energizing.  Even better, when writers are willing to share with other writers, we all get to improve our craft, sales, and stories.
